SDN China Website
The SDN China website was launched in 2003 with the intention to provide localized docs and tutorials on Sun's product and technology for developers in China. The original URL for our website is http://gceclub.sun.com.cn/, meaning eClub in Greater China region. During the past two years it gradually evolved into a full-featured web 2.0 portal with forums, wiki, and blog services. Right now we feel that the old URL is no longer capable of desribing the real purpose of this site, so we are in the process of migrating to a new URL, http://developers.sun.com.cn/.
As of April 2007, there are 420,000 registered members at SDN China portal. Every month thousands of developers download Solaris, NetBeans and other Sun software products from the SDN China download center.
Besides the above-mentioned official SDN China site, we are also working closely with several other Sun and non-Sun sites to promote Sun's product and technology, they are:
Technology Outreach Events
There are many different types of technology outreach events going on in China. We catagorize these events (roughly) into the following groups:
- Sun Developer Days -- usually one-day or two-day events, with most of the speakers coming from Sun internal. The topics might include Java, Solaris and other technologies from Sun, depending on the theme of a particular event.
- Solaris and OpenSolaris Events -- usually a half-day event, with most of the speakers coming from Sun internal. The topics are usually limited to Solaris and OpenSolaris technologies.
- Java and NetBeans Events -- usually a half-day event, with most of the speakers coming from Sun internal. The topics are usually limited to Java and NetBeans technlologies.
- Sun University World Tours -- usually a half-day event, with most of the speakers coming from Sun internal. The topics might include Java, Solaris and other technologies from Sun, but the content is geared towards students and other academic developers.
- Hands-on-Labs -- usually a one-day event, with most of the speakers coming from Sun internal. We give the audience hands-on trainings on computers running the Solaris operating system, while the topics might include Java, Solaris, and other technologies form Sun. We provide computers (laptops running Solaris) for the audience, and the size of the audience are usually restricted -- due to the limited number of computers available.
- Partner Events -- the length and size of these events are quite different. Sun works closely with Intel, Motorola, AMD, and other IT companies and industry associations to offer these events to local developers.
- Campus Ambassador Events -- campus events offered by Sun Campus Ambassadors. We are working closely with the Education Line of Business to offer smaller scale tech talks by our campus ambassadors across China.
On these events we usually distribute our Solaris DVD, our developer tools DVD, along with other gifts such as dukes, books, t-shirts, to the audience.
Tutorials and Training
SDN China is currently working on providing extensive tutorials and trainings to both academic developers and commercial developers in China. We are currently offering trainings to university teachers on both Java and Solaris, which will enable these teachers to teach the latest technology from Sun to their students.
We also work with a variety of technical writers and publishers to offer books on Sun's product and technology. Each year we manage to publish around 10 books on Java, NetBeans, Solaris and Sun Studio, so that developers can easily pickup Sun's product and technology from bookstores.
- For a full list of the university teachers training events in China, please visit the FY07 SDN China Events page.
- For a full list of the books we published in China, please visit the SDN China Books page.
Code Competition
Every year SDN China organizes various code competitions targetting at both students and commercial developers. A lot of developers are eager to learn Sun's product and technology, but often find it difficult to identify the right spot to use these product and technology. These competitions provide guidance for developers on where our product and technology apply, and how to apply these product and technology. Further more, the top coders get highly recognized among their peers by delivering a high quality projects for the competition.
Below is a list of the code competitions we are working on:
- Java Cup Student Code Competition
- Java ME Applications Development Competition (with Motorola)
- NetBeans Plugin Development Competition
- OpenSolaris Programming Competition
- ACM/ICPC Regional Competitions in China
SDN China Contribution Award
The SDN China Contribution Award is setup to recognize the contribution to the SDN China program from outside of the SDN China team. There are many ways to contribute to the SDN China program, for example, answering questions on our technical forums, delivering presentations on our technology outreach events, providing training to university teachers, maintaining the SDN China wiki site, and blogging on the SDN China blogging platform.
The winner of the SDN China Contribution Award has the pleasure of choosing an electronic device under a certain value (the upper limit is a top secret), and SDN China will purchase this particular item for the winner as a gift. This is our way of saying thank you to those people who help us in making our program successful.
